Gum disease, gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Gum disease is also known as gum infection, it is also one of the leading cause of tooth loss of most Americans. Gum infection is being indicated by tender and swollen gums, gums that are red in color and easily bleeds when brushing. Gums may also recede as one of the advance state of the condition. Gum infection spreads under the gum line, gum tissues and the bone can be damage when the infection gets into them.

Gum infection may prevented by having a good oral hygiene, however if gum infection already occurred you need to seek your dentist help fro proper treatment. Untreated gum infection or gum disease may lead to more serious condition and eventually tooth loss.

Red, puffy, tender and swollen gums and every time that you brush or floss and you are gums bleed are the simple indications then you have the early signs of gum disease. Other symptoms may also include such as having pus coming from your gums and teeth, changes in the way your teeth fit when you bite and having pockets. Proper and good oral hygiene such as brushing and flossing is one way and the easiest way to prevent bacteria build up that causes gum disease. Regular brushing and flossing alone cannot completely remove bacteria in your mouth especially in the hard to reach areas and it can only be done by your dentist thus visiting your dentist for professional cleaning is important. Early symptoms of gum and tooth problem may be detected by your dentist through dental check ups. For serious conditions a help from your dentist is necessary.

However, gum infection is reversible with home oral care and professional treatment. Home oral care treatment includes regular brushing and flossing of teeth and rinsing the mouth with warm water and salt solution. For professional treatments, it is important to seek your dentist’s help.
